Venezuelan Landmarks

What is the geography of Venezuela and what are some interesting places to visit?

The four main regions of Venezuela are the Maracaibo Basin, the Andes Mountains, the Orinoco plains (los llanos), and the Guiana highlands.
The Maracaibo Basin is located in northern Venezuela. The basin consists of Lake Maracaibo and surrounding lowlands. The lowlands form an oval and are bordered by mountains on most sides and the Caribbean Sea to the north. Most of the area is flat and slowly slopes towards the middle away from the mountains. Lake Maracaibo takes up most of the area of the lower lying middle of the Basin. Lake Maracaibo is the largest lake in Latin America and is 5,211 square miles in area. The swampy southern parts of the lake have hold of South America's largest petroleum deposits, along with space beneath the lake. The lake has an average depth of only ten meters. It is separated from the Caribbean by sandbars and islands. A narrow channel connects the lake to the Caribbean for transport across the two. The southern tip is covered in forests, swamps, and lagoons. Cacao and sugar plantations are scattered along the areas with better soil. The channel lets saltwater into the northern parts of the waters, making the water unsuitable to drink.
The mountains in the northwestern region of Venezuela are the Andes Mountains. This region has three main parts: the Merida Range, the Central Highlands, and the Northeastern Highlands. Most peaks are over 4,500 meters. The valleys in between the ranges are very fertile and contain most of the country's population, agriculture, and industry. The slopes of these mountains are heavily forested and some of the peaks are snow capped year-round. The highest point on the Venezuelan Andes is Pico Bolivar, a mountain peak. It is 5,007 meters above sea level and is always covered in Neve snow, snow at the peaks of mountains. It can only be reached by walking.
The Orinoco Plains stretch westward from the Caribbean to the border of Columbia. This region is commonly known as “Los llanos.” This is because most of the land is plains land, though there are stretches of swampland in the Orinoco Delta and the Colombian border. The elevation is never higher than 200 meters above sea level. Cattle ranches are abundant throughout the plains. There are also farms dotted around Los llanos, but since Venezuela has a long dry season, irrigation has to be used for crops like sesame and rice. Oil fields are located on the eastern side of the plains. The Rio Orinoco is the longest river in Venezuela. It begins in the Guiana Highlands and flows west to east along the southern border of the Orinoco plains. The river and its tributaries run through most of Venezuela. Rio Orinoco stretches 1,284 miles and is the most used form of transportation in Venezuela.
The Guiana Highlands are located in the southern part of Venezuela and cover almost half of Venezuela. Also, this area is heavily forested. Tributaries of the Rio Orinoco have eroded the plateaus to create odd formations. The Gran Sabana is the largest of these formations. It rises from surrounding cliffs and reaches up to 800 meters high. On top of the Gran Sabana is what the locals call “tepuis.” Tepuis are large, flat-topped bluffs. The most well-known tepui is home to Angel Falls. Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world. It reaches a height of 3,212 feet. This waterfall is so high that most of the water evaporates or turns to mist before it reaches the ground. To get to the falls is a very complicated task. Angel Falls is in a very isolated part of Venezuela and one must fly to get near the base, then ride a boat. Finally, there is a walk to the actual base. Most areas of the Highlands are not very populated besides scattered tribes of Indians. Large deposits of iron ore, bauxite, and gold are located in this area, along with hydroelectric dams.
So, come to Venezuela to see the beautiful countryside, the majestic mountains, and the verdant forests!
